Welcome!

Capturing attention!

I draw from Emily Dickenson for our class room inspiration. Her words profoundly state the capability of our minds, young and old.  I love the reaction from students when I read the above quote and ask them if they think their brains are wider than the sky.  Young minds can't imagine such crazy talk! It is this sense of imagination that draws in their interest.

( I find that a sense of humor always reels students in. )

Teaching comes natural for me, but so does ART! I owned a design boutique for six years before I became a teacher.  I studied at IU and Calument College, earning both my Bachelor and Master degrees in Art and Education.

I find that students absolutely love Art! They enjoy the challenging projects I present to them.  It always amazes me to see students gain new skills while learning a creative concept.  Nothing is better!

It is crucial for students to witness art in its many forms and to realize that everything in the world was conceptualized by an artist somehow.  Everyone has a talent to share with the world.  If we open our eyes to the beauty around us, we will be inspired to be:

"wider than the sky."

Artistically yours,
Mrs. Corral

Congratulations to our 16 new Curators this year! We are diving into projects already and look forward to having another awesome year!

Congratulations!

If you have items you would like to save and bring in, please contact me via email first.  I am extremely tight on space due to large collections I have conducted the past two years.  Thank you!

Volunteering!

There is always a need for help in the art room!  The younger grades are always in high demand of extra hands at the beginning of the year when procedures are being learned.  However, I can use assistance with any grade level at any time!  I also take the fifth grade on an annual field trip to the Brauer Museum in May.  I will need a handful of chaperones at that time.  Please send me your information, availability, and interest early so that I can accommodate your request.

Why Art???

"Art does not solve problems, but makes us aware of their existence," sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz has said. Arts education, on the other hand, does solve problems. Years of research show that it's closely linked to almost everything that we as a nation say we want for our children and demand from our schools: academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity.

Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. A 2005 report by the Rand Corporation about the visual arts argues that the intrinsic pleasures and stimulation of the art experience do more than sweeten an individual's life -- according to the report, they "can connect people more deeply to the world and open them to new ways of seeing," creating the foundation to forge social bonds and community cohesion. And strong arts programming in schools helps close a gap that has left many a child behind: From Mozart for babies to tutus for toddlers to family trips to the museum, the children of affluent, aspiring parents generally get exposed to the arts whether or not public schools provide them. Low-income children, often, do not. "Arts education enables those children from a financially challenged background to have a more level playing field with children who have had those enrichment experiences,'' says Eric Cooper, president and founder of the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education.
